The Franklin Society – What’s in a name?
Welcome to the Franklin Society’s website. If this is your first visit to our site, you may be wondering why we chose the name, and what we are all about. To understand this, you must take a step back in time … to Philadelphia, on September 18th, 1787. On this day, the deliberations over our constitution had just been completed, and the convention had come to a close. Upon exiting constitution hall, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a woman in the crowd gathered outside, “What kind of government have you given us?" Franklin responded with one of the most famous quotations in history, "A Republic, if you can keep it.".
In this one sentence, Benjamin Franklin so eloquently summed up the great hopes of a nation about to be born, and the fragility of the freedom required to sustain it. For we have been given, through the bloodshed and immense sacrifice of our founding fathers, a governmental construct never before seen in the annals of history; a unique opportunity to engage in self-governance – “A government, of the people, by the people, and for the people”. But with this opportunity, came the obligation to be eternally vigilant; to protect and defend liberty, and to treat our constitution with a reverence and respect that would be worthy of the many lives sacrificed to obtain it.
Sadly, America today has strayed from our constitutional roots. We have allowed our government to expand into roles it was never intended to fill. We are slowly losing our freedom, day by day, because we have allowed our constitution to be routinely misinterpreted, or even worse, ignored outright. Our republic is in a state of great peril.
But it is not too late to correct the path we are on. A great awakening seems to be taking place in America, and it is imperative that it becomes widespread.
The Franklin Society, along with the Tea Party movement, and other patriots across the nation, is committed to:
As you browse through our site, pause for a moment, and think about the pledge made by the signers of the Declaration of Independence: “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor”. Each of the men who signed this document knew full well, that they had effectively signed their death warrant. Does the passion that drove these men to do this still exist in America today? Are we willing to make the same kind of sacrifice to preserve our republic as those who secured it for us some 234 years ago?
We urge you to thoughtfully consider these questions, and to get involved! Join with us, and your fellow patriots. Together, we can rise to meet Benjamin Franklin’s challenge. WE WILL KEEP OUR REPUBLIC!
